External Hard Drive Not Detected in Windows 11?

This guide is for a mechanical external HDD that Windows 11 does not detect at all. Listen for power and activity first, then work from the cable and port toward Windows checks without rushing to format a drive that may contain files.

Power and connection

Check how the hard drive behaves when connected

A portable HDD may vibrate or spin up. A desktop-size drive normally needs its own power adapter; check that it is connected to power and that its indicator behaves normally. Try a different USB cable and a different direct USB port, avoiding a hub or dock for this test.

Repeated spinning up and down, clicking, scraping sounds, or no activity on more than one PC point beyond a simple Windows setting.

Detection path

Check Device Manager and Disk Management

Open Device Manager. Check Disk drives and Universal Serial Bus controllers for the HDD or a warning icon.
Open Disk Management. Identify the disk by capacity, even if it has no drive letter.
Assign a letter only if the volume is otherwise healthy. This can make a visible disk appear in Explorer.
Check updates and drivers. This is most useful when the issue began after a Windows or driver change.

Data safety

RAW and unallocated are not invitations to erase files

If a previously used HDD appears as RAW, unallocated, or asks to be formatted, pause before initializing, partitioning, or formatting it. Those actions can overwrite structures that recovery tools or a data-recovery professional may need. They are suitable only when you know the drive is new and empty.

Second computer

Use another computer as a controlled test

Test the drive with a different cable on another PC. If it works there, the original PC's port, controller, or driver is the better target. If it fails everywhere, focus on the HDD, enclosure, or cable.

When this is probably a hardware problem

Clicking, a drive that cannot stay powered, abnormal heat, very slow reads, and detection failure on multiple computers are warning signs. If the files matter, copy what you can while the drive is stable and stop repeated scans or repairs.
