Measure Windows 11 drain while awake and while shut down

Stop before testing if the battery is swollen, overheating, leaking, or physically damaged. Shut down, disconnect the charger if safe, and discontinue use. Do not keep running on AC power, press a raised case flat, open the battery pack, or try to puncture it. Arrange manufacturer or qualified repair support.

1. Find the active-use baseline. In Settings > System > Power & battery, review Battery usage for a period when the laptop was unplugged. Note which apps were active and whether the screen was on. A high share identifies where energy went; it is not proof that an app is faulty.
2. Repeat a similar workload. Lower brightness, select an efficient power mode or Energy saver if available, and close one unnecessary busy app. Compare runtime under similar conditions so you can tell whether a change helped.
3. Separate sleep from shutdown. Closing the lid often leaves the PC asleep. Save work, note the charge, disconnect external USB devices, and hold Shift while choosing Shut down for a one-time full-shutdown comparison. Leave it unplugged for a comparable interval and record the charge on the next start. Startup itself consumes some power.
4. Interpret the difference. Drain mainly during sleep points toward standby activity or wake behavior. Use hibernation for a comparison if your device offers it. Substantial repeatable loss after a full shutdown points toward battery wear, always-on USB charging or firmware/hardware behavior; check the model's settings rather than disabling random Windows services.
